The person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses"(Source:http://nobelprize.org/)
More than a century ago in 1895 Sir Alfred Nobel’s will, mentioned the above guide line for awarding the Nobel Peace prize. I think the current Norwegian Nobel committee had followed their own guidelines for choosing the 2009 Noble peace prize winner.
Barack Obama has neither done the most nor the best for the fraternity between nations during his current tenure or before being elected as the President of United States. Talking about the reduction of standing armies, it is the USA who invaded Afghanistan and Iraq and were into war for the past 8 years. Moreover he increased the troops in Afghanistan substantially in February 2009 just after a month of assuming the office. He might have tried to reduce the troops in Iraq. He did not do this for the greater good of the world but only as fulfillment of his election promise.
If we take example of earlier peace prize recipients like Mother Theresa, Wangari Mathai, Amnesty International etc, these people\institutions had dedicated their life time for the greater good of world and Peace. I still don’t understand how Obama fits into this clan of Nobel Laureates. When his country is into midst of economic turmoil Obama came into power by instilling 'Hope' into every American. Obama is currently struggling to steer this great American ship from the economic cyclone of 2008. Nobel peace prize is considered as the most esteemed award by many people in the world, but this mockery of peace by Nobel committee will leave a strain on the image of the Award itself. May be Obama would have instilled ‘Hope’ in Americans, but most people in the world would have lost the same (HOPE) on the Nobel committee.
On a lighter note, As one of my friend said the main reason why the President of USA was awarded the prize because USA did not wage war against any other country in the past 6 months which itself is a huge peace initiative for the World
